چکیده

Although for therapeutic reasons it has become convenient to consider asthma as a single disease entity, this clearly is not the case, with many variants occurring. From a clinical standpoint, a minimal subdivision includes atopic asthma, cough variant asthma, brittle asthma, intrinsic asthma, occupational nonIgE dependent asthma, and aspirin intolerant asthma (AIA). This last variant constitutes a clearcut clinical syndrome. It is a remarkable model for investigating mechanisms that operate in asthma, rhinitis, and nasal polyposis. The recent introduction of anti-leukotriene drugs has amplified interest in this syndrome.

IL-23 Gene and Protein Expression in Childhood Asthma

Background: Asthma is the chronic inflammation of airways characterized by eosinophilic infiltration, mucus overproduction, airway hyper-responsiveness and airway remodeling. These changes are induced mostly by cytokines which are produced by T helper (Th) 2 cells. Recently, the role of interleukin-23 (IL-23) in the pathogenesis of adultallergic asthma has been studied. Objective: To explore IL...

EAACI/GA2LEN guideline: aspirin provocation tests for diagnosis of aspirin hypersensitivity.

Aspirin and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are among the most common causes of adverse drug reactions. Majority of them are of the hypersensitivity type. The two frequent clinical presentations of aspirin hypersensitivity are: aspirin-induced bronchial asthma/rhinosinusitis (AIA/R) and aspirin-induced urticaria/angioedema (AIU). The decisive diagnosis is based on provocatio...

The cyclooxygenase theory of aspirin-induced asthma.

Aspirin-induced asthma is a distinct clinical syndrome which affects about 10% of adult asthmatics. In these patients aspirin and several other analgesics precipitate asthmatic attacks. The idea that the attacks might result from the specific inhibition of a single enzyme, namely cyclooxygenase, has gained both experimental and clinical support. It stimulated a number of hypotheses on the mecha...
